Globally, traffic accidents are a serious security issue causing injuries and fatalities to a significant number of people each year. According to the latest data published by the World Health Organization in 2023, approximately 1.1 million people lose their lives each year due to traffic accidents worldwide. Traffic accidents, which are considered as the leading cause of death for individuals aged 5-29, result in injuries to 20 to 50 million people annually. Since 2005, the United Nations General Assembly has designated the third Sunday of November as the "World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims." For this year's awareness day falling on November 16th and themed "Remember, Support, and Act", an AA journalist compiled recent fatal traffic accidents worldwide. One of the devastating accidents of recent years occurred in December 2024 in the Sidama region of Ethiopia, where 71 people died as a truck carrying wedding guests veered off a steep and winding road into a river. In response to the tragedy, officials noted that people often travel in the back of trucks in the region, emphasizing that this practice increases casualties in accidents on sharp turns and steep slopes. In Pakistan, two separate bus accidents on the same day in August 2024 claimed the lives of 36 people and injured over 30 individuals. Additionally, in the Gilgit Baltistan region of the country, 26 people died when a passenger bus plunged into a river a few months after these incidents. Another tragic event took place in December 2024 in Minas Gerais state in Brazil, where a passenger bus caught fire after colliding with a truck on the highway due to a tire blowout, resulting in the deaths of 41 people. It was reported that a granite block falling from an overloaded truck approaching from the opposite direction caused the accident. In the town of Londiani in western Kenya, a truck lost control in July 2023, collided with vehicles at an intersection, and plowed into a market stall, claiming the lives of 51 people and injuring over 30 individuals. Another traffic accident occurred on November 12th in southern Peru, where 37 people died as a passenger bus collided with a pickup truck and rolled off a cliff. Describing traffic accidents as a "global epidemic," David Cliff, CEO of the Global Road Safety Partnership, emphasized the alarmingly high mortality rates associated with these incidents. He pointed out that road safety involves ensuring safe vehicles, roads, appropriate speed limits, and compliance with traffic rules, emphasizing that there is no single cause for traffic accidents. Emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits, Cliff highlighted that fatalities or severe injuries in traffic accidents result from the force generated during collisions, regardless of whether a vehicle hits a pedestrian or a passenger hits the interior of a motor vehicle. Clifford underscored the significance of wearing seat belts for all passengers, regardless of where they sit in the car, warning that a person in the front seat wearing a seat belt might lose their life during an accident due to someone not wearing a seat belt in the back seat. He advised parents to place babies and children in car seats rather than on their laps in order to prevent them from moving forward in a collision and potentially being ejected through the front windshield. Cliff also warned drivers against using cell phones, stating that distractions such as texting and talking on the phone prevent drivers from focusing on the road and the task of driving, making delayed reactions more likely when a situation arises. Cliff emphasized that if a person is not concentrating on the road, it takes longer for them to react when something happens ahead of them. For instance, texting or similar actions that make someone drop their head forward indicate a lack of focus on the driving task.
